A fire-rated door and a smoke-control door are not necessarily the same thing. When reviewing a fire door specification, you may see requirements for both fire rating and smoke control. They address different risks.
What Is a Fire Rating?
A fire rating indicates how long a fire door assembly has demonstrated fire-protection performance under the applicable fire test.
Common ratings include:
- 20 minutes
- 45 minutes
- 60 minutes
- 90 minutes
- 180 minutes
The required rating should be confirmed according to the approved project documents and applicable local codes.
What Is a Smoke Rating?
Smoke-control requirements focus on limiting the amount of smoke and air leakage through a door assembly. For UL applications, smoke and draft control door assemblies may be tested in accordance with UL 1784, Air Leakage Tests of Door Assemblies. For certain swinging fire doors, an "S" marking indicates that the door has been evaluated for smoke and draft control requirements.
Fire Rating vs Smoke Rating
| Item | Fire Rating | Smoke Rating |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Limit fire spread through the opening | Limit smoke and air leakage |
| Typical requirement | Time-based fire-protection rating | Air-leakage performance |
| Example | 90-minute fire door | UL 1784 / "S" marking requirement |
| Automatically includes the other? | No | No |
The key point is: A fire-rated door does not automatically satisfy every smoke-control requirement.
The project must specify what is required.
Why Does This Matter When Ordering?
A project may require:
- Fire protection only
- Smoke control only
- Both fire protection and smoke control
Depending on the application, the complete door assembly may also require suitable gasketing, frame, hardware, and other components. That is why buyers should not simply order a "90-minute fire door" and assume all smoke requirements are automatically covered.
What Should You Confirm?
Before ordering, check the approved project documents for:
- Required fire rating
- Smoke-control requirement, if any
- Required standards or markings
- Gasketing requirements
- Door and frame configuration
- Hardware requirements
