Why Fire Door Quotations Change After Technical Details Are Confirmed

You receive an initial fire door quotation. After the drawings, hardware, or other technical details are confirmed, the price changes.

Why?

In most cases, it is because the final product configuration is different from the assumptions used for the preliminary quotation.

Here are the most common reasons.

Door Dimensions Change

Fire door prices can change when the confirmed dimensions are different from the original enquiry.

This may happen because the original size referred to the:

  • Door leaf
  • Frame
  • Rough opening

For double doors, the individual leaf widths may also need to be confirmed.

Even when the quantity stays the same, a change in dimensions can affect the final configuration and price.

The Scope Changes from Door Leaf to Complete Set

An initial enquiry may simply say:

"Please quote fire doors."

Later, the buyer may confirm that the quotation also needs to include:

  • Frame
  • Hinges
  • Lock
  • Door closer
  • Fire exit hardware
  • Seals and other accessories

A quotation for a door leaf only cannot be compared directly with a quotation for a complete door set.

Hardware Requirements Become Clearer

Hardware can make a significant difference to the final quotation.

For example, a double door may require a different hardware configuration from a single door.

Once the hardware schedule or approved requirements are available, the quotation may need to be updated to match the actual project scope.

Fire Rating or Certification Requirements Are Confirmed

Sometimes an early enquiry does not clearly state the required fire rating or certification.

Once these requirements are confirmed according to the approved project documents and applicable local codes, the supplier may need to revise the quoted configuration.

Preliminary Quote vs Final Quote

A preliminary quotation is useful when some project information is still missing.

But before placing an order, the final quotation should reflect the latest confirmed dimensions, configuration, hardware, certification requirements, and accessories.

When comparing the first and final quotation, ask:

What changed in the product scope?

That is usually more useful than looking only at the difference in price.
